DC9 Stage 3 Modification Program


Airweld, Inc.'s DC9 Stage 3 Modification Program is designed to allow DC9 aircraft to operate in compliance with FAR 36 Stage 3 noise reduction requirements through the modification of engines, thrust reversers, and associated cowls and hardware parts. Airweld's program has numerous benefits including:

  • Significant modification cost savings over the competition.
  • Continued maintainability through use of McDonnell Douglas interchangeable parts;
  • Customer controlled procurement costs of Pratt & Whitney parts. 

The Customer Will:

  • Provide the prerequisite DC9-30 series aircraft equipment as required by Airweld's STC;
  • Provide serviceable DC9-30 series engine thrust reversers, upper and lower engine cowl doors, and forward pylon aprons to Airweld, Inc. for modification to STC requirements;
  • Comply with Pratt & Whitney prerequisite Service Bulletins (SB 5947, SB 5948, SB 6326) for all engines installed on the DC9-30 series aircraft to be modified including, but not limited to, the installation of P & W designed and FAA approved re-spaced inlet guide vanes and exhaust mixer assemblies as required by Airweld's STC;
  • Provide for the installation of 40 degree maximum flap stop as provided by Airweld's STC;

Airweld Will:

  • Provide modifications to serviceable DC9-30 series aircraft engine upper and lower cowl doors and forward pylon aprons, supplied by the customer, to the requirements of Airweld's STC;
  • Provide modifications to serviceable DC9-30 series aircraft engine thrust reversers, supplied by the customer, to the requirements of Airweld's STC when such thrust reversers are found to be Stage 2 noise compliant;
  • Provide parts required to mate nose cowl EPR and anti-ice systems to the Stage 3 modified engines, when such nose cowls are found to be Stage 2 noise compliant;
  • Provide 40 degree maximum flap stop kits for installation per requirements of Airweld's STC;
  • Provide on-site technical representation, as requested by the customer during re-installation of the modified components;
  • Provide supplements as may be required for Airplane Flight Manual, Structural Repair Manual, Illustrated Parts Catalog, and Maintenance Manual to ensure continued maintenance and airworthiness of the aircraft.
